KAMPALA, April 30, 2025 – The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has officially released a comprehensive guide outlining the requirements for candidates seeking nomination for elective positions. All candidates must fulfill these requirements and obtain clearance from the Directorate of Legal Services (DLS) prior to the nomination process.
The nomination criteria emphasize key aspects such as age, identity verification, voter registration, academic qualifications, and conduct. Notably, candidates must be at least 18 years old and present proof of Ugandan citizenship, which can be validated through their National Identity Card or Application Number from NIRA. Additionally, candidates contesting in the NRM party primary elections must show they are registered voters.
“Citizenship and voter registration are fundamental prerequisites for any candidate aspiring to contribute meaningfully to our democratic process,” stated Enoch Barata, Director of Legal Services at NRM. “These requirements ensure that candidates meet necessary legal standards and uphold the integrity of the electoral process.”
Candidates aiming for positions such as Member of Parliament or Local Government Councilor must attach verified academic documents in line with the Parliamentary Elections Act. This includes verification letters from the Uganda National Examinations Board for those with Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) or equivalent certifications from the National Council for Higher Education for other qualifications.
The guide also addresses name changes, stipulating that candidates must submit a statutory declaration for minor corrections or comply with legal requirements for substantial name changes. Additionally, public servants wishing to contest must resign and furnish proof accordingly.
All aspiring candidates are required to submit two recent photos with a white background and ensure they do not fall under disqualifying criminal conduct guidelines, such as sentences exceeding nine months for crimes involving moral turpitude.
The NRM urges all interested parties to prepare their documentation early and adhere to these guidelines to ensure a smooth nomination process.
